ohn Curtis Porter, 73, of Beaumont, TX, died peacefully on July 14th after a valiant battle with brain and lung cancer.

John Curtis was born on July 8, 1947 to Joseph and Elma Porter in Beaumont, TX.  After graduating from Herbert High School in 1965 he later completed his Associates degree in restaurant institutional food management in 1996 at Lamar University, where he graduated magna cum laude, a distinction given to those graduating with outstanding academics.

He spent most of his career working as a House Manager at Land Manor’s Franklin House South, a substance abuse treatment center, a job he loved because he enjoyed helping people.

John Curtis was a committed volunteer at the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life and took pleasure in participating and giving back every year.  He also enjoyed trying his luck and loved to play the lotto and scratchers and go to the casino with his wife.  He was an avid sports fan and loved watching college football at Lamar University and rooting for his favorite NFL football teams, the Houston Texans and Oakland Raiders. 

John Curtis was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Cleveland Porter and Elma Agnes Porter.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Larklyn Porter; his sister, Barbara McClendon and brother, Leroy Porter; his four children, daughters Antonia Porter, Deonna Long, Shorna Allred, and his only son JaRae Martin; has nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
